We’re only about a third of the way through 2022, and the year has already seen some huge hit movies take a hold of the box office. The top three domestic box office rankings for the year so far aren’t surprising, with The Batman taking the top spot, earning a gross of $365,002,773. In the second spot is last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Another Tom Holland flick, Uncharted, follows in the number three spot. However, many were surprised by the film in the number four domestic box office spot, which is another franchise film. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 opened on April 8th in 4,258 theaters. In under two weeks, this video game movie has already earned a gross of $118,916,783.
At first thought of as merely a memeable movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had one of the biggest openings since the pandemic. Not only that, but this kids’ movie has been getting rave reviews from critics & fans alike. In the bloodthirsty battle between the film studios, Paramount Pictures is holding their own with Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
The secrets behind Sonic’s success
So how is it that the sequel in a video game film franchise is quickly becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of 2022? First of all, Paramount Pictures hired top-tier talent to help produce Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Reprising the role of Sonic’s voice is the wickedly talented Ben Schwartz, who many of you may know as Jean-Ralphio on Parks and Recreation.
Iconic character actor James Marsden returns in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as Tom Wachowski. Marsden has appeared in many films over his career, including Hairspray, X-Men, Enchanted, and Superman Returns. While Marsden is frequently recognized for his dramatic acting, his comedic abilities often go overlooked.
Another returning cast member of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the always funny Jim Carrey, who portrays the menacing Dr. Robotnik. While Carrey went deep into character for the first
Part of what makes Sonic the Hedgehog 2 such a juggernaut of a film are its additions to the cast & crew. For this sequel, Paramount Pictures brought in Idris Elba to voice Knuckles the Echidna, Dr. Robotnik’s partner in crime. On the screenwriting side of things, Paramount added John Whittington to the writing team.
Praise for Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Like many big-budget blockbusters with colorful special effects & four-quadrant appeal, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has gotten much more positive feedback from audiences rather than critics. For instance, the film’s score on Rotten Tomatoes is around 67% positive, while its Metacritic rating is only 45%. Still, some film writers did enjoy this sequel.
Sean Keane from CNET wrote, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the confident sequel the original left me hoping for, with a sharper script and jokes that’ll leave you giggling.” Keane continued, “It maintains the original’s family friendly tone and dives into the classic games to create a cinematic universe for Sega’s beloved icon.”
Writing for the Atlantic, David Sims was a little more backhanded in his compliments to Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Sims said, “The inclusion of other CGI characters actually helps balance out Sonic’s manic energy a little bit.”
Sims added, “watching them bounce off of one another is somehow easier than watching human actors try their best to interact with imaginary creatures that couldn’t show up to set.” Despite some critics lambasting this film as the impending demise of cinema, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is making a killing at the box office.
