Gopichand hasn’t delivered a hit lately. Lately, he’s been struggling to offer a decent outing.
He is leaving his comfort zone of mass entertainers and has tried a spy thriller with “Chanakya”. Does this give him a new boost to his career?
Let’s find out…
Arjun (Gopichand) is an undercover RAW officer, but he poses as a bank employee Ramakrishna to the outside world.
India’s most wanted terrorist Qureshi and his son are hiding in Pakistan with full security from ISI.
As India gears up to host the G8 summit, the government of India does not want to take any chances to rescue four kidnapped officers who were kidnapped by Qureshi. But Arjun goes to Karachi against his boss’s orders to rescue his fellow officers.
Will he succeed in this operation ‘Chanakya’?
Performances by artists:
Gopichand has played the role of a RAW officer in typical mas-hero style. He portrayed the character in his usual way.
The character of Mehreen as his love interest is so stupid. The less we talk about Mehreen and Zareen Khan’s performance as a Raw informant in Pakistan, the better.
Nasser as Chief of RAW is just okay. The villains are adapted to their roles.
The film has been lavishly shot in Rajasthan and surrounding areas. Superb camera work by Vetri is the main highlight of the film.
The music, the dialogues, the action stunts and other technical output are very ordinary.
Some episodes in the second half
Terrible first half
Comedy for dogs
Spy thrillers are the power of Hollywood. Many Indian movies have been inspired by the Hollywood movies and have largely followed their lead from the spy genre.
Very recently, we’ve seen a captivating spy thriller – Adivi Sesh’s “Goodachari” which received critical acclaim for its compelling screenplay and intelligent twists.
But Gopichand starrer “Chanakya” is quite the opposite. This spy thriller is not only boring but also ends up looking like a mess.
Mark our words, at the end of the interval bang you would be cursing yourself for seeing a terribly romantic song between Gopichand and Mehreen.
The story is about two dogs. A vet (played by Ali) tells Mehreen that her dog needs a female to mate. She approaches Gopichand with the request to allow the mating of their dogs, he initially refuses and she tries to convince him with all kinds of talk (condoms, paying for hours, booking resorts, etc.). By the end of this long and terrible song, they fall in love! That is the writing standard of this film.
Fortunately, we don’t see such crappy scenes in the second half. But we don’t get many interesting scenes either.
The next action drama in the second half defies logic and is filled with predictability. Some sequences are intelligently shot in the second half, but by then we lose interest in the film.
Zareen Khan’s episode is laughable.
All in all, “Chanakya” is a spy thriller made in a certain weak scenario template. The bad guy keeps saying expect the unexpected, but we’re not getting any such novelty here.
Bottom line: Boring and boring!
